Behind the Artwork: The Last Tree

The story behind the opening piece in the Through Their Eyes collection.

Behind the Artwork: The Last Tree

The Last Tree is about what remains when a habitat disappears.

At the centre of the artwork is an orangutan, surrounded by a landscape altered by human activity. The image is deliberately beautiful at first glance, but the longer you look, the more uncomfortable the story becomes.

Orangutans depend almost entirely on healthy forest. Trees provide their food, shelter and the routes they use to move through their environment. When those forests are cleared or fragmented, the impact reaches far beyond the loss of individual trees.

That idea became the foundation of The Last Tree.

Rather than creating a traditional wildlife portrait, I wanted the animal and its surroundings to tell one story. The orangutan isn't simply placed against a background. The changing landscape is part of the portrait.

There is also a question behind the piece: what happens when the last safe place disappears?

Like every work in the Through Their Eyes collection, the aim is not simply to show an animal. It is to encourage us to look at the world from its perspective.

The Last Tree is available as a fine art giclée print in A3, A2 and A1.

The first 100 prints across all sizes are released as First Editions, individually numbered and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
