Smoke on the Wind — Koala

The Story Behind the Artwork

Koalas are built for a very specific, very narrow life — slow-moving, deeply dependent on a handful of eucalyptus species, poorly equipped to relocate quickly when the ground beneath them changes. This piece doesn’t show flame. It shows the aftermath carried on the air: haze, filtered light, a landscape softened into something that looks almost peaceful until you notice what’s actually happening to it. That restraint is deliberate. Fire seasons have become a recurring feature of the Australian landscape this animal calls home, and the point isn’t to recreate the drama of the event itself — it’s to sit with what’s left after the drama has passed, when the smoke is still in the air and the forest hasn’t yet decided whether it will recover. The koala isn’t fleeing. It’s simply present in the changed air, the way these animals so often are: quiet, slow, and asked to adapt faster than their nature allows.

5% of every sale from the Through Their Eyes collection supports wildlife conservation — set aside and donated annually at year end.
