The Last Tree — Orangutan

The Story Behind the Artwork

Orangutans evolved almost entirely for a life spent above the ground — hands built for branches, patience built for canopy. In this piece, that inheritance is set against a landscape that no longer offers much to climb. What was forest now reads as clearing: stumps standing where trees once held a whole ecosystem together. The orangutan does not look away from it. There is no dramatic gesture here, no performance of distress — only a steady, animal attention to a world that has changed faster than a lifetime should allow. That patience is part of what makes the image unsettling. This is an animal built to wait, watching a home that keeps shrinking around the waiting. The title asks a simple question without answering it: what happens after the last tree is gone. Not as a warning, exactly — more as a fact the image refuses to soften.

5% of every sale from the Through Their Eyes collection supports wildlife conservation — set aside and donated annually at year end.
