The Last Witness — Gorilla

The Story Behind the Artwork

Gorillas are close enough to us — in expression, in family structure, in the weight of a held gaze — that it’s difficult to look at one and feel entirely separate from what it sees. In this piece, that gaze is turned outward, across a forest reduced to logs and stumps and the kind of quiet that follows machinery rather than birdsong. The gorilla is not posed as a victim. It is positioned as exactly what the title suggests: a witness. Something has happened here, and something remains to register it. There’s a difference between an image that asks for sympathy and one that asks for attention, and this piece is built for the second. The forest behind the gorilla isn’t a backdrop; it’s the subject the animal is watching, the same way we are watching the animal. Two kinds of witnessing, one frame.
