The Divide — Zebra

The Story Behind the Artwork

Zebras move in patterns older than most human borders — herds tracking rainfall and grazing across distances that predate the idea of land ownership entirely. This piece is built around a quieter kind of obstacle than the usual wildlife threats: not a predator, not a drought, but a fence line, a boundary drawn for reasons that have nothing to do with the animal standing at it. The stripes themselves become part of the idea — a pattern built for camouflage and cohesion, set against the straight, deliberate lines of something engineered. The title doesn’t specify which divide it means, and that’s intentional. It could be the fence. It could be the wider gap between how migration used to work and how it’s expected to work now, inside boundaries that mean nothing to an animal that has never recognised a map. The zebra isn’t struggling against it. It’s simply standing at the line, unconvinced.

5% of every sale from the Through Their Eyes collection supports wildlife conservation — set aside and donated annually at year end.
